Detention Review Assessments

The Ombudsman is required by the Migration Act 1958 to assess the appropriateness of the immigration detention arrangements for each person detained for more than two years. The Ombudsman's assessment is provided to the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, along with a de-identified version which the Minister must table in Parliament. Links to the de-identified assessments and the Minister's responses are available in this section.

Since 2014 the Ombudsman has undertaken a review of all s486O reports sent to the Minister. This analysis looks at both the internal processes involved in producing these assessments and the experiences of those people claiming asylum.
