Postal Industry

Legislation to create a separate office of Postal Industry Ombudsman (PIO) within the office of Commonwealth Ombudsman was passed by Parliament in on 29 March 2006 and will take effect later in 2006.

Under the legislation, the Commonwealth Ombudsman will also undertake the role of Postal Industry Ombudsman. It will be possible to make complaints to the Commonwealth Ombudsman about the services of Australia Post as well as any private sector postal operators who register to participate in the scheme. The PIO will have the normal powers of an ombudsman to require information or documents and to publish findings.
