Professor John McMillan was appointed Commonwealth Ombudsman in March 2003, and was reappointed in 2008 for a further five year term.

Mr Ron McLeod came to the office from a wide-ranging career in government.

Philippa Smith (1993–1998)

Ms Philippa Smith was the first female and the first non-lawyer to be appointed as Commonwealth Ombudsman.

Mr Alan Cameron undertook his appointment in a time of change.

Professor Dennis Pearce (1988–1991)

Professor Dennis Pearce followed Mr Geoffrey Kolts for a three-year term during which the office’s case load continued to expand.

Geoffrey Kolts (1986–1987)

After an interregnum during which Air Vice-Marshal Jordan acted as Ombudsman, Geoffrey Kolts was appointed from his position as First Parliamentary Counsel.

Professor Jack Richardson (1977–1985)

Professor Jack Richardson instituted and developed the office’s reputation for intellectual rigour and a robust approach to public administration.
